These 6 online interview tips will help you land that job

It’s hard enough to get an interview, but thanks to your awesome CV from Kickresume , you finally have a chance! So your potential employer wants to interview you on Zoom- now what? Follow our tips for the perfect online interview!

1. Dress to impress.

We know it seems silly to dress up while you’re at home, but the normal dress code still applies for online interviews. Make sure you’re dressed professionally- that includes putting your pants on! Putting your formal shoes on will also help you get into the right mindset.

2. Eliminate distractions.

Make sure you’re sitting somewhere quiet for the online interview. Lock your pets out of the room and tell your roommate to postpone his jam sesh- you’ll need to focus.

3. Choose the perfect background.

Sit against a neutral wall so that your interviewer doesn’t get distracted by any photos, posters or messy piles of laundry. This will let them focus on the star of the interview- you- without creating any environmental biases.

4. Select your chair.

Ideally, you want to sit straight on a low-backed chair, like a folding chair or a stool, that doesn’t take up too much screen space. Test your chair for weird creakiness- you don’t want to be making excuses for your squeaky chair during your online interview.

5. Use earphones.

Bad video is easily forgiven, bad audio not so. Your interviewer will appreciate being able to hear your answers clearly. Avoid headphones if you can- they can look bulky and take the focus off your face.

6. Look into the camera lens.

We know its difficult to avoid looking at your screen but looking directly into the camera while talking will give the appearance of confidence. The eye contact will also keep your interviewer engaged.
